2. TURKU Nomads of The Silkroad with Mavi in Concert

Turku plays music from the western half of the Silk Road. They have played for
audiences as large as 8000 people and as far away as Samarkand, Uzbekistan
since 1998. Their music has received radio play as far away as Portugal and
Uzbekistan. South Carolina Public Television has shown Turku's performances on
many occasions. The members of Turku live in the Carolinas of the USA. TURKU Band has also participated in the Washington DC Turkish Festival many times.
Turku is a five member ensemble including Ted Monnich on saz, Farzad on violin
Daveed Korup on hand drums, Carla Monnich on davul and zils, Bayhar on bass
guitar.

3. Bridge to Turkiye Foundation Batman Girls Dormitory Fundraiser, Sat. Jan. 29

BTF invites you to join us for an intimate evening of fellowship and mingle

BTF has partnered with Milliyet Newspaper in Turkiye for a project to build a
girls' dormitory in Batman. Batman has one of the lowest rates of enrollment
of girls at schools and the highest rate of suicide among young girls. The
proceeds from this event will help us reach our goal of building this
dormitory. BTF has raised a total of $190,000 for this project and is very
close to reaching the $200,000 goal. We want to put the final $10,000 Brick at
our event.

There are no tickets necessary to join the event. You can make your
contributions in three ways. You can donate at the event, send us a check
(payable to "Bridge to Turkiye Fund") directly to BTF, or donate online on the

5. A Route Less traveled Anatolian Artisans Cultural Tour to Turkey
ANATOLIAN ARTISANS (AnARt) is a non-profit, tax-exempt (501c3) organization
dedicated to serving the needs of low-income artisans and raising awareness
about arts and culture of Turkey. AnARt has a unique mission to:
-Provide sustainable economic benefits to low-income artisans through product
development, marketing and training.
-Raise awareness about arts and culture of Turkey by organizing exhibitions,
festivals, fairs, conferences and seminars.

We hope you'll consider joining Anatolian Artisans for "A Route Less traveled" -- a Cultural Tour of Historic and Traditional North Central
Anatolia, including the Central Black Sea coast. The cultural tour starts
(and ends) in Istanbul -- twelve days and eleven nights, from the evening of
May 23 through June 4. We will visit three World Heritage sites and a number
of local artisans along the way.

This is the story of a strange, impossible, inexplicable love between a Turkish woman and a Bulgarian man. Ivan is a pure and romantic young fellow, who gets caught up in the so-called `regeneration process` [when ethnic Turks` names were forcibly changed to Bulgarian ones]. He is responsible for the official seals, which are required to issue the new identity documents after the forced name changes. The schoolteacher Ayten tries to steal the seals to stop this. Their unexpected and unusual meeting brings these two characters together and makes them feel close, forcing Ivan to make a fateful decision- he must either rename Ayten, or face the consequences if he does not. They gradually overcome their animosity, accept their differences and draw towards each other. But will the people around them accept their choice? Screenwriter Neri Terzieva says: The most important thing in the film is their love, which endures despite the societal cataclysms brought about by the misguided decisions of the state authorities and politicians. Our desire in making this film was to heal the wound, not to open it back up.

BEYNELMILEL: Set in Adıyaman, the business for a group of local musicians hits
rock bottom due to curfew laws implemented in 1982. The solutions they seek end up with the group in jail. The region’s martial law commander puts a twist to the story when he decides to create a ‘modern orchestra’ with the local musicians. The orchestra is asked to prepare a welcoming ceremony for the military council’s visit to the town. There is yet another group who is eagerly waiting for the arrival of the council: the activist university students lead by Haydar, a political science student, and Gülendam, the daughter of the new local orchestra chief plan a protest during the welcoming ceremony. The military law and the local orchestra on one side and the protesters on the other, unexpected events are about to unfold during the ceremony. DONDURMAM GAYMAK: Turkey’s official entry for the 79th Academy Awards and the
Golden Globe Awards, Dondurmam Gaymak (Ice Cream, I Scream) is “a film telling
the tragicomical story of the hopeless struggles of small business owners
(represented by an ice cream vendor) in today’s global economy” according to the film’s director. In the summer of 2005, director Yüksel Aksu, a native of Muğla, a small town on the Aegean coast of Turkey, brought together the city’s natives to produce a movie of international standards. Approximately 2,000 residents were chosen from Muğla and its surrounding locations as actors. The film focuses on Ali, a local ice cream vendor, who tries to survive in the face of fierce competition from the big ice cream brands. Festivals and Awards: 2007 HBO/U.S. Comedy Arts Festival (U.S.A.): Best Foreign Language Film, 2007 Palm Springs International Film Festival (U.S.A.) , 2006 Queens Film Festival (U.S.A.): Best Director, Best Comedy.

A “Must See” Festival Celebrates Turkish Dance, Music, Arts, and Cuisine

Washington, DC—The American-Turkish Association of Washington DC (ATA-DC) is pleased to present a day-long free fun-filled “must see” family festival celebrating authentic Turkish art and culture at the 5th Annual Turkish Festival on Sunday October 14, 2007 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Freedom Plaza and Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 13th and 14th Streets.

The Turkish Festival highlights include a rich variety of live Turkish musical and folk dance performances. Dances will depict wedding and henna night celebrations as well as vibrant lives of people from rustic Turkey. Performances will offer an exceptional glimpse of Turkic life, culture, and art in the region. Numerous musicians will delight the ears with Turkish melodies featuring traditional instruments from various regions of Turkey.

The Festival will also feature a Kids’ Tent to experience Turkish culture with hands-on activities and offer to the kids and their parents to have an unforgettable memory. This year the TURKids’ Tent will introduce seven geographical regions of Turkey with creative art and crafts activities to entertain children and allow them to explore another culture. Children and parents from different nationalities will spend great time together learning about historical facts such as the original stories of the Trojan Horse and Santa Claus, the great city of Istanbul and bosphorus.

The Culture and Tourism Tent will host a variety of interesting aspects of Turkey. The array of events will include exhibitions and guest speakers sharing their experiences, memories or knowledge of Turkey. Some of the highlights of the cultural activities will be; demonstration of the art of ceramics and miniatures, presentation of 2010 Istanbul European Capital of Culture, facts about seven different regions of Turkey, screening of the award winning documentary “Hiphopistan” and displaying works of various Turkish artists. Please refer to the Culture Tent section of our website for the most-up-to date program, guest speakers and the artists of the Culture and Tourism Tent.

Festival-goers can also taste delicious Turkish cuisine from the area’s Turkish restaurants. Kabobs, vegetarian dishes, and sweet and savory pastries will be available for purchase. This year, the Festival will feature a special booth by Gulluoglu, a family-owned sweets business founded in 1871. Varieties of Gulluoglu baklava, recognized as the best selling baklava in Europe, and other pastry specialties will be available for sale.

Fortune-tellers will be on hand in the special coffee house to read fortunes from coffee grinds and more than 20 arts and crafts vendors will showcase Turkish jewelry, hand-woven textiles, and pottery.

Turkish Festival hopes to make everybody cheer up, smile, and enjoy Turkey’s and exceptional cultural and historical traditions.

Admission to the Festival is FREE. Parking is available on side streets. Metro stop is Federal Triangle, then go north on 12th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Turkish Marketplace at Disney's Epcot Center in Orlando
